Empowering communities with advanced solutions for energy management in flexibility markets
STUNNED aims to reduce the energy consumption of buildings. We develop smart solutions to manage energy production and use, enabling the active participation of energy communities as key players in energy flexibility markets.
The solutions are tested in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, aggregated in energy communities in Italy, Spain and France
About the project
- Challenge
Today, roughly 75% of buildings in the EU are energy inefficient, indicating that a large part of the energy used goes to waste. Such energy loss can be minimised by improving existing buildings and striving for smart energy solutions, amongst other measures.

The STUNNED Concept
STUNNED will develop a platform capable of optimising the energy flexibility of buildings, allowing the efficient management of energy exchange between users, following technical and economic criteria. The core of the solution implements a three-layer market model, where buildings and industries reduce costs and emissions, aggregators optimise energy supply and demand, and market operators ensure grid stability.
Energy Communities
An energy community is collective initiative driven by citizens that enable the generation, sharing, and management of energy. Actions carried out by energy communities advance energy efficiency within the local community, contributing to the clean energy transition. They promote ownership and sharing of benefits to foster local engagement and adoption of sustainable energy measure. Energy communities are able to act as a single entity, accessing the energy market on a level-playing field with other market actors.
Energy Flexibility Services
Energy flexibility allows the optimization of energy generation and consumption in a system, and the respective flow of energy to and from the electrical grid. STUNNED’s energy flexibility services are range of solutions that help buildings in energy communities as players in the electricity network to manage their energy for a more efficient supply. Local flexibility markets will enable the distribution of energy resources at the local level.
