Demo Site – Murcia, Spain

Uniting three distinct sites, the Spanish demo explores their potential as a connected energy district, harnessing their combined flexibility capacities

Information about the Demo Site.

The STUNNED Spanish pilot will be developed in three different buildings: one residential building in Murcia city, one public building (offices building) and an industrial site for frozen storage (New Concisa headquarters). There is PV for self-consumption in all the buildings, while New Concisa has a battery storage too.

Role of your demo site in STUNNED

The Spanish demonstrator will test the STUNNED solution to provide flexibility services to the grid. The platform will be responsible for optimizing the flexibility of the buildings based on a set of technical and economic criteria, aggregate loads for this purpose, and finally proceed to activate the flexibility.

The wide scope of the Spanish pilot (residential, offices and industrial buildings) will ensure the replicability and scalability of the solution beyond the demo and the project. Demo partners are very interested in testing the flexibility performance to include these services in their portfolio, so STUNNED will be the perfect environment to test and develop the best solution for the markets.

Challenges

In Spain, the flexibility market is not fully developed and currently, the participation is limited to customers with more than 1 MW, so mainly industrial sites. However, it is expected that this limit will be reduced in the next years to allow the participation of smaller consumers through aggregation and at the same time, enable flexibility markets at the DSO level. Within the Spanish demonstration of STUNNED, the CUE distribution network will serve as a real framework for the implementation of a local flexibility market where the three buildings will act as flexibility service providers.

Use cases

The flexibility market at the DSO level will enable the following services that will be tested in the Spanish demonstrator:

1) Voltage regulation and congestion management, contributing to solve the issues that the grid is facing and minimizing the costs on reinforcing the DSO network;

2) Explicit DR services will be enabled for aggregators, as the DSO will send signals for DR events, and the aggregator will control the loads of its portfolio to react to these events, being compensated for the load change.

3) The wholesale and intraday markets will allow aggregators and retailers to enable implicit DR services for their clients. Market prices (hourly now and 15-min soon) will be the signals for the users to shift their demand from the most expensive hours to the cheapest ones.
